The week has passed in a blur. Probably due to a combo of lack of sleep and not having a clue what I'm doing. But...everyday gets better and I learn a little more about this thing called motherhood.
First things: I am totally overwhelmed by the love I have for this kid. I can't even put it into words. I wasn't ready for that.
The Story: (Be warned- this will be long- but I wanted to get it all down in writing before I forget the details)
Byron was on call on Tuesday and got home from work at about 11 on Wed. I had gone into the Doctors on Tuesday for a check up and sonogram to make sure the baby was on track and ok. We scheduled an induction for Wed evening, since my doctor wouldn't be on call over the New Year's holiday, and I was so ready to meet that baby! But- Tuesday night- I couldn't sleep. The thought of pushing the baby before it was ready was just eating at me. I didn't want to start motherhood out like that- pushing before my baby was ready. So- When Byron got home- we talked. He felt the same way and I called the doctor and cancelled the induction. Byron went to bed and I joined him for a nap. I got up around 1:30 and started browning some meat for dinner. About 15 minutes later- my water broke.
As a side note- I was a little surprised when my water broke. As of Tuesday- I wasn't dilated at all (which was a little depressing).
I let Byron sleep for about 1 more hour while I got a few quick things done around the house. But- I couldn't stand it anymore and woke Byron up around 2:30. He asked "Are you sure? Can we wait until your contractions are closer?" Um...yes I'm sure. My water breaking was unmistakeable. Poor guy- he was so tired. I called the doctor and she said to come into the hospital since my water had broken. So- he got up, packed a bag and drove me to hospital. By the time I got checked in- I was having contractions 2 minutes apart, but was only 1 cm dilated. They were surprised by how quickly I was progressing on my own. So-they got me admitted and started doing the blood work and IV's. By the time all that was finished I was 4 cm dilated and was HURTING. Contractions every 2 minutes was waring on me. Byron was trying to distract me with games on the iPhone- but I honestly couldn't focus on anything but getting through the next contraction. They couldn't do the epidural until all my lab work was complete- which felt like an eternity! The nurse kept asking me to "Rate my pain" on a scale of 1-10. Huh? I thought the pain was bad- but if that was only 4 cm - then what the heck would 10cm feel like? YIKES!
Anyway- the anesthesiologist came in and gave me the epidural. That man must love his job- because he has got to be everyone's BEST friend when he enters the room! I was a completely different person after that. I could focus, carry on conversation and smile. I don't know how people do it without the drugs! Those women deserve metals!
My Mom and Dad were actually on their way out here already and got the text when they got off the plane that I was at the hospital and my water had broken. They came strait over to the hospital and I got to visit with them and the grandparents for a few minutes that evening. I told them to go home and get some rest since It would probably be a while before any action started. They refused (All of them) and said they were going to wait it out. Dan and Kate also drove up from Houston that night for the arrival.
I progressed very quickly and was actually able to relax a bit and fall asleep. Byron caught a quick cat nap in the chair as well. Around 11 though- my epi started waring off on one side. I had to get a little boost. I was 8 cm at that point and it HURT! But we had to wait a little while for the epi to ware off a little so that I could feel enough to push.
I started pushing at around 12:30 and Wyatt was born at 1:30. My epi was def. waring off, and I was starting to feel a good bit of pain- but thankfully I didn't have to push as long as some first time mothers do! 1 hour was ENOUGH! I kept saying "please baby- come out- please please please". Byron said I only cried out once- when he finally came out on the final push. I of course dont remember any of this.
But I do remember the first time I laid eyes on him, and the doctor announced that it was a boy. My world froze at that moment. I was so overwhelmed with joy and love I just started crying. I couldn't speak. They laid him in my arms and there is no going back! I'm in love!
