Wigs for Kids

Donated 11 inches last weekend:) Byron's not too crazy about it (Again). But....it's for a good cause and let's face it. I haven't done my hair since Dec. 29th, 2011. It feels great to shower, get dressed, dry and "Do" my hair in 15 minutes flat.

Wyatt also had his 2 month shots last week. Ugh. I do NOT like those days! Talk about ripping your heart out. They make you pin them down. Then they do the airless scream- you know..the one where he cries so hard he runs out of air. Awful.

This was the calm before the storm. Poor little man had no idea what was coming.

He's fine now. So far so good. He's been a little more clingy, and ran a slight fever this afternoon, but he is still playing on his mat and sleeping well. Horray!

8 weeks today

Wow. What a big boy. I can't believe he's already so big. I've tried to catch a smile for you on my camera- but every time I pull it out- he stops doing whatever cute thing he's doing and just stares at this new gadget. So- half smiles on my phone are the best I could do.

A few firsts this week:

1. First time I left him in the church nursery! It wasn't really that big of a leap since there was only one other baby in there and two workers. But hey- I thought it was brave. Of me:)

2. FIrst time with a 'babysitter' that isn't Byron or either of our Moms. I had a teeth cleaning so Grandma Branch got to watch the little guy for 45 minutes or so. So...I guess that doesn't really count as a sitter either.

3. First time to roll over. Completely by accident. He was on his tummy nearing the end of "Tummy time" and he was mad. Even more so after he rolled over.

Other news:

* He's trying to suck on his hands more-He doesn't have complete control unless his arms are sort of confined in front of his face. But- I take it as a good sign of self soothing. Or it could be a curse and I could have a 7 year old thumb sucker. Who knows.

* He's been consistently taking a long nap in the afternoon which is great! I usually spend the first 1-2 hours doing a few things around the house/making phone calls and then I join him for the last hour. Most of the time - he stays asleep for about 2.5-3 hours, and he wakes up so happy. Well - as long as he gets to eat soon after waking. But- this nap has been a life saver this week. Byron is on the last day of a marathon call schedule so- there have been no breaks for Mommy either.

* He's completely out of newborn clothes. Wyatt is very good at eating. It's his favorite past time.

And for comparison, here are some photos of wyatt at 2.5 weeks with four generations. I meant to post those a while ago- but they were also on my phone and I just saw them while scrolling through the photo book. My how time flies!

6 weeks old

Wyatt has hit the 12 lb bench mark and is continuing to grow like a week. He is now out of all his newborn clothes! He is a GREAT eater and seemingly wants to eat all waking hours. Which may be why I am always craving ice cream, candy bars, and cookies. I know I need to eat healthy snacks- but the doctor told me not to "Diet" too soon. Mothers often go on strict no fat diets and the milk supply dwindles. So- there you have it: medical advice to keep eating candy bars. Or...at least- that's how I"m going to view it. Remind me to STOP eating those candy bars when I stop nursing.

He sleeps for one long stint for the first interval (From about 10-2 or 2:30 ish). Then every 2.5-3 hours after that. So-I usually am up twice in the night for feedings. But honestly- I it's not so bad. He is so sweet and cuddly at night...It's special mommy and baby time. He makes sweet little squeeks while he eats and usually goes right back to sleep after a good burp and a diaper change.

He LOVES to eat. O my. He is such a happy baby after a meal. He will smile and coo and it just melts my heart every time. It's amazing what 15 minutes can do to his disposition. Screaming mad- red in the face - feed me crying to.....

sweet smiling, talkative little boy.

During the day- he usually is awake and playing happily on his playmat for about 45 minutes. He wiggles like crazy during this time, which I think assists him in "doing his business". Then- he wants a diaper change and for Mommy to hold him while he practices standing up for a while. Then- right on the one hour mark- he wants to nap. He doesn't know he wants to sleep but we're working on that. The morning transition to sleep/napping is great. He lays down in my arms for about 2 minutes, takes his passy, gets groggy- and allows me to put him in his crib without a fuss. This is an entirely different story around 7 at night when he just can't seem to go to sleep without someone holding him. He'll sleep for about 45 minutes and then he's up...screaming mad. Sometimes I can resist and he'll cry/wine himself back to sleep. Sometimes I read to him for 15 minutes. (Note: I read my books out loud. He doesn't know the difference. I think he just likes the sound of my voice).

We are working on stretching out his naps. He sleeps perfectly for 1.5 hrs if someone is holding him while he sleeps, or is moving in his stroller. But, this is not a habit I want to endorse. So- we're working on teaching him to go back to sleep on his own. It just makes for some long days! I know it'll be worth it in the long run. It's a steep learning curve for both of us- but we are happy and healthy and so- we press onward toward the goal of good sleep. For all our sake's.

In other news, I'm trying to write a section for a paper our lab is submitting in the next month. I'm challenging myself to focus on something other than shopping for a change during my spare 30 min each day! jk. But- it is work I've already done and I'd like to get the credit for it. So- wish me luck this next week in Wyatt's napping habits!

Byron is doing well and is getting to operate a ton on his own now. He's on a rotation where he gets to take home call- which is nice. Some nights he gets to sleep without interruption (lucky duck...as he never hears the baby) and in his own bed. A home cooked meal (By all our loving church friends up till now) doesn't hurt either.

Speaking of cooking: my cooking habits have also changed. Whatever I can make in 30 minutes flat is what we have. None of this "let it simmer for 1 hr" stuff anymore. It's just not possible. I can hold the baby and do many things- but I'm too nervous to cook with him on my shoulder.

A little yard work

Byron was off today so I got to get out and run some errands sans baby this morning. But- Momma gone= 1 fussy baby. Geesh. He was so clingy and wouldn't take a nap longer than about 10 minutes. Byron was trimming trees and I hated to let the beautiful day go to waste. So- I strapped him into his Moby wrap and he FINALLY went to sleep.

My back will be sore tomorrow, but the yard looks great!
